Stahlivision 02: radio/podcast interview

Quite a few people chimed in that they'd like to see some vlog action on here, which i've shied away from previously because i couldn't fathom anyone actually wanting to see them over something actually engrossing. But here goes nothin'

And here is the link in question.

p.s. experiments with these are looming.

"Welcome to Lunar Industries"

Went to the one theater here playing Moon last night with Klayton (ONE theater! While movies about talking secret agent guinea pigs and Sandra Bullock rom-coms are on every screen...this is not a world of justice). Tiny little art theater with a small screen and a horrible sound system...and i was still completely enveloped and blown away by this film. i don't know who's in charge of doling out Oscars, but i've just decided i am (i even put on a special hat to denote that i have a new title and responsibility) and this is a sweep. Sam Rockwell deserves SOME kind of fancy accolade for the amazing performance in this flick. Writer/director Duncan Jones...you are one creative mofo. Composer Clint Mansell? . . . You are Clint Mansell (that statement already carries nigh-deity status).

Demo To Final...a process of VHS excretion

Demo to final, beta to V1.0...ever wonder what takes so damn long to go from rough song concept to the audio blaring out of your speakers? If you want, maybe i'll take you guys into the process a bit down the road and post little video updates of me trying to make one of my crappy demos listenable. In the meantime, the best way i can describe it is in the Big Dog quadrupedal robot from Boston Dynamics. Consider the finished project in action as it runs, corrects itself, and handles nearly anything thrown at it:

NOW compare that with the early beta version that harasses people, can't dance, and fails at the swings:

The LED's are mocking you...

Developed by Moment Factory and Photonic Dreams, this interactive installation at La Vitrine reacts to passers by (using tracking devices, low-res LEDs and a sense of machine superiority) and either "redefines the traditional architectural façade" or is simply mocking us puny humans.

The Naked Truth

THE NAKED TRUTH from ABOVE on Vimeo.

Beautiful street art from Above (go check out the site for much more, the stories behind the pieces and tips on how to run around Europe for next to nothing). i'm now amazingly tempted to make Blue Stahli stencils and fill Detroit with 'em. Wonder if i can resist...

Apparati Effimeri: “Tetragram For Enlargement”

APPARATI EFFIMERI Tetragram for Enlargment from Apparati Effimeri on Vimeo.

i know. You read that title piece and thought "geometry and male enhancement". Actually, since i'm finishing up vocal editing on Burning Bridges today, i thought you guys would enjoy seeing what happens when you give some uber-talented video artists multiple projectors, a killer IDM soundtrack and a freaking building as the subject/physical canvas? You get the video artist collective of Apparati Effimeri (translated, means "We're better at this than you"). Go check out their site for more performances, general radness, and visual environment design (seriously, taking a physical space and making it morph, contort, and play out like Blade Runner on crack is beyond cool).

Here's a showreel featuring more manipulated buildings, live band backdrops, interior video environments and the aformentioned general radness:

Stahlivision: Big Man Japan!

This last Saturday, when i was leaving the studio i was ambushed. A black bag was thrown over my head (and what i believe to be a party-hat with an elastic chin strap placed on top), i was put in handcuffs and shoved into a vehicle that sped away with a strange mix of Shaka Ponk, Britney Spears and Skinny Puppy playing very loudly [which led me to believe it was someone i knew]. Upon arriving at our destination, the bag and shackles were removed. i saw that not only was my captor sporting a very short skirt (which was okay by me), but that it was all a ruse to take me to a movie i had been dying to see . . . Big Man Japan.

You *need* to go see this movie. Wildly entertaining stuff! Here's a trailer full of awesome:

Steampunk Synth and a...something

Modular synth with amazing steampunk design by Moritz Wolpert. "All parts such as buttons + handles were on the lathe by hand." Just a little taste of the inner-goodies is that it features "ring modulator, control voltage, and a complex rhythm Center". Holy hell, my only modular experience is somehow making perfectly good Reaktor ensembles completely useless. i'm almost afraid that routing an oscillator on this thing incorrectly results in your eternal soul being devoured.

Moritz Wolpert (whom i imagine hates being called "Maury") is also the man responsible for this thing:

What does it do? Why, it gives you intrusive probing examinations in all the most delicate of areas (like Tetsuo The Iron Man performing a physical), of course! Just kidding, here's this bit of musical gear and pinion in action:

Stahlivision: Flying what-now?

Thought i'd post something a bit more upbeat. Don't get me wrong, there's still a sense of foreboding and ominous doom...they just find the time to be highly larious about it.

Stahlivision: Now THIS looks like a good time...

O F F L I N E from Matthew Santoro on Vimeo.

Sent to me by Virocity (who's art you are already familiar with), what you're looking at is a pitch trailer by Matthew Santoro made for ...not a ton of moolah to get interest into developing it into a feature (to raise money, i'll be starting a new version of Bumfights to sell on the black market, but instead of dishevelled vagrants, it's me vs. girl scout troup leaders in the grocery store). i want this on perpetual loop on a huge screen to be the only light source in the studio, please.

Head to Slashfilm to find out more.
